套戲根據1963年Profumo Affair為藍本改編而成，一位著名政客Dennis Markham被一位「多事」嘅記者Nick Mullen獲得嘅小道消息導致仕途盡毀，事後Mullen通過同事Vernon嘅死先知事情並不簡單，於是Mullen下定查清真相的決心，好彌補對同事之死嘅愧疚，點知讓佢走上了意想不到嘅政治不歸路。政客醜聞、核災難、KGB（克格勃）、MP（軍事員警）、上級部門的不負責任、傳統紙媒為求炮製新聞而忽略新聞背後的真相等元素，搭上黑暗和幽閉的基調，套戲挖掘了許多80年代中期英國左派關注的問題，亦系呢套戲嘅最大賣點之一，而另一個賣點當然系初出茅廬青澀嘅Gabriel Byrne同戲份唔多嘅冷豔美人Greta Scacchi。
