Long-separated wife Sofia cares only for the inheritance, assuming alcohol overdose, but it was murder with a vodka bottle rammed into his throat. Possibly his last visitor, who left a cap there, was Elsa's doting tacky diner colleague and would be-boy friend Jan, who is relieved Carl can no longer oppose a relationship.
